Kurozuchou, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in small ways: seashells, ferns, whirlpools in water, whirlwinds in air. And in large ways: the spiral marks on people’s bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi’s father, the voice from the cochlea in your inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurouzu-cho are pulled ever deeper, as if into a whirlpool from which there is no return… (Source: VIZ Media)

Review:

Talk about a messed up horror manga. Ito Junji sensei is known for his horror manga. He’s one of the best in his field. Uzumaki is a horror/psychological manga about Spirals. I can tell you this much, once your done with this manga you’ll see spirals everywhere and you wont feel the same way about them as you did before reading this manga. The story is interesting and heartbreaking. However, the main character is a bit annoying. Some chapters of the manga were quite messed up. I believe that this is a great horror manga to read for both horror and non-horror fans. The only down side of the manga was the ending. It felt rushed and totally made up. The story is still good and worth reading.

Short version:

“The manga is very good in terms of story and art. Its quite dark in terms of horror. If your looking for something enjoyable and scary you should pick up this manga!”

Overall Rating: 8/10
